Guide From the Bloome team

Use calm words to negotiate salary.

Salary negotiation can make even confident people feel exposed. You may be grateful for the offer and still need to ask for more. You may want the job and still know the first number does not work.

The goal is not to become a different person. The goal is to have clear words ready before adrenaline takes over.

Before the offer call

Know your floor before you hear the number. Your floor is the lowest offer you can accept without resentment, panic, or practical strain. It may include salary, benefits, location, hours, title, visa support, or start date.

Also decide what you would trade. Some people can accept a lower salary for meaningful equity, flexibility, learning, or stability. Some cannot. Neither answer is more mature. The point is to know before pressure arrives.

Script for the offer call

When they make the offer, you do not have to answer immediately. Try: Thank you. I am really glad to have the offer and I am excited about the team. I would like to review the full details carefully. Can I come back to you by Friday?

If they push for a reaction, stay calm: I am positive about the role. I just do not want to answer before I have reviewed the full package properly.

Script for a low offer

If the salary is below what you can accept, be direct without sounding offended. Try: I am excited about the role, but the salary is below the range I can make work. Based on the scope we discussed, I would be looking for something closer to [your number]. Is there room to get nearer to that?

You are not apologizing for needing a workable package. You are giving them a chance to solve the gap before you decide.

  • Name the gap calmly.
  • Connect your ask to scope, not personal pressure.
  • Let them respond before explaining too much.

Script for a competing offer

If you have another offer, use it honestly and sparingly. Try: I wanted to be transparent that I have another offer with a higher salary. I remain very interested in this role, and if there is flexibility in the package, I would like to understand what may be possible.

Do not invent competing offers. Do not threaten. A real competing offer is context, not a weapon.

Where Bloome takes the load from here

Negotiation takes more energy when you are also trying to keep the search alive. Bloome is one way to handle the background search and applications so you can focus on interviews, offers, and the words you need in these moments.

You brief it once in messages. It searches around the clock, applies only when the fit is strong, writes a tailored note, and reports back. Bloome is currently waitlist-gated.

Questions, answered.

What should I say to negotiate salary?

Thank them, show interest, name the gap, and ask whether there is room to move. Keep the sentence calm and tied to the scope of the role.

Can negotiating salary make them withdraw the offer?

A respectful negotiation should not be treated as a problem by a healthy employer. There is always some risk in any negotiation, so be clear, reasonable, and prepared for their answer.

Should I negotiate every job offer?

You should at least consider it. If the offer is already strong and meets your needs, you may negotiate other terms or accept. If it does not work, negotiate before deciding.
